Dear SQ, My mouthy 15-year daughter argued with the teacher that she didn’t use AI-generated text in her English paper but the school wanted to suspend her. In a parent conference, it was agreed we’d supervise, consult, and sign-off on a new assignment defending the authenticity of her original paper. Our kid is pissed at everyone and refuses our help.
Dear Parent, It is a great learning opportunity! The contract terms are: supervise (you can look at her computer work anytime, impose deadlines), consult (give advice whether she wants it or not), and sign-off (or refuse. Insist that the rough-draft be approved by the teacher before you sign-off). Use a program that shows her keystrokes and corrections from her rough-draft to final form.
She’s 15 with spunk. But, like many things in life, this contract is not between equals. Be the good parent or the tough love parent, her choice. -SQ
