Dear Suze Q. I’m dating Alan, who’s widowed with no kids. He wants to date exclusively, then live together, assumedly in my house because he’s in a small apartment. The other night a guy stopped us, called him Bill and asked how he and his kids were. He answered the questions, then said a hurried goodbye. Alan said he didn’t know the guy, but pretended he did because he thought it was funny. I stopped asking questions when he got mad.
Dear Peacemaker, Good that you didn't stop thinking about it. Time to do something. You trusted, now verify. This was a red flag, so put everything on hold until you are absolutely, positively sure he’s not a conman or worse. Pop the $ to pull his background check and see if his information fits with what you know, or is it #2 RED FLAG. Better to have loved and lost than to let your house become his home and you a victim of a romance scam. -SQ
