Therapy Robot Responsible For Teen Death?

Dear Suze Q. We heard about the Southern California family suing OpenAI’s ChatGPT for being their 16-year-old son’s “suicide coach.” The parents’ interview was heart-breaking and sounds like the teen’s death was preventable. Our 12-year-old uses ChatGPT for homework, just as Adam Raine initially did. We’re debating allowing its use just for homework, but how do we monitor this without alarming our child?

Dear Parent, Forewarned is forearmed. This applies to your daughter too. Odds are she’ll hear about this suicide through rumors. Best idea is to have her listen to the parents’ story and/or for you to have a frank discussion with her about the flaws of AI, how talking to parents/trusted people/professionals might have prevented this. Make a plan with her school about use or not of AI. Monitor her closely, take nothing for granted in this fast, electronic world. Trust her, but verify everything. -SQ
