Dear Suze, I had a 20-year wonderful relationship, but eventually we grew apart. We both stayed young in our heart, but he didn’t change from his teenage years -impulsive, self-centered, undependable. Why didn’t he grow up?
Dear Adult, Broadly, maturity is when one no longer requires oversight in decision making when consequences matter. It involves years of intentional choices that develop responsibility, empathy, emotional intelligence, morality, etc. that integrate as one ages. There are zillions of reasons why people fail to develop or integrate these traits. As endearing as it sounds, Peter Pan Syndrome, adults who never grow up, is not a plus. -SQ
