Dear Suze Q. I’ve been married 40 years but should have divorced long ago. The latest twist is accusing me of gaslighting. What does this really mean? She accuses me of canceling family get-togethers or stopping her from going out -neither is true. Our adult kids want me to divorce and be happy.
Dear Accused, Gaslighting is a rampant psychological abuse tactic used to exert power and control by distorting reality to make the victim confused, helpless, and dependent on their abuser. (For a treat, watch the 1944 movie, Gaslight). If you’re innocent, and she’s nuts, why stay? -SQ
