Dear Suze Q. My 10-year old has ADHD and the second he was diagnosed and treated, life became beautiful. No more dealing with the Energizer Bunny who had an inability to sustain attention (even for things he loved), hyperactivity (his body always in motion), and impulsivity (got in trouble because he couldn’t foresee the consequences of his actions).
His dad has the adult version although the hyperactivity and impulsivity are tons better as he ages. He says it was a childhood problem and refuses to talk about it. He leaves things undone that drive me batty. Not huge projects like before, but drawers partially open, jars not fully screwed on, even clean stacks of laundry where half made it back to his drawers but the rest still sit on the bed. And my pet peeve -the microwave won’t start. When he used it last, he pulled his food out before the timer went off and didn’t clear the remaining 20 seconds.
Dear Batty, ADHD behaviors get better with age, particularly hyperactivity and impulsivity but they’re still there. If your husband’s remaining behaviors interfere with his self-esteem, job, or home life, it could be time to reevaluate with his M.D. or other mental health professional with expertise in adult ADHD. Even a brief consultation could help because the knotty problems you find are probably ones that bug his boss/co-workers too. If he still refuses, suck it up, Buttercup. Not worth the fight. -SQ
