Dear Suze, I just found out our 65 year-old mother has been paying a guy she met on a dating app. They’ve never met but he’s promised her the world and love forevermore. He just ask for more money, lying that he was mugged at the airport on the way to visit her in her home in Chicago. I did a search and showed Mom he doesn’t exist. Who can help?
Dear Son, The U.S. Federal Trade Commission recommends she contact her bank or company, and dating site immediately to report a “romance scam,” then complete a report to ReportFraud.ftc.gov. In 2021, the FTC received over 56,000 complaints that Americans were swindled out of $547 MILLION -money usually never recovered. Consider brief counseling if your mom is in denial of what happened, the seriousness, the embarrassment. -SQ
