Petty People

Dear Suze, I was warned my new sister-in-law is a petty person and best to avoid her and not let her get under my skin. I thought initially that she was sweet, just a bit of a drama Queen. But she overreacts and hold grudges about insignificant things that’s always someone else’s fault. If I try to reason or solve the issue, then she turns on me! She’s critical, has to have the last word, and believes she’s better by tearing the person down. I can’t win.

Dear Can’t Win, exactly true, so stop over-analyzing and act. Are you a therapist and she wants help to change? NO! Are you petty and obnoxious too, and you want her as your bff? NO! Do you want to be her understudy and become disliked and a miserable human being? NO! Walk away/avoid interactions; set boundaries and stick to them (like never see her alone); truthfully say why you can’t be friends -ex: she exhausts you with minutia and negativity; life’s too beautiful and short to dwell on ugliness. -SQ
