Dear S.Q. My 75 y.o. dad is dating a woman barely older than me. He won't help with his grandkids private schools but is all-in for a 2 month, 5-star hotel European trip. He won't listen to stop spending $ on her every whim and save for future problems. Who can I speak with to get him into a nursing home? I'm sick of dad acting like a kid.
Dear Sick, If dad's healthy enough for a 2 month European trip, I doubt he'll qualify for a nursing home unless a court of law declares him incompetent and you are awarded power of attorney or guardianship. Until then, his money is his to spend as he wishes, and if indulging himself is his choice, so be it. Perhaps a better strategy would be for you both to consult an attorney NOW, before the trip, about Dad setting up untouchable trusts for his kids and grandkids -in case, the worst happens on the trip. Then, have the attorney be the "bad guy" and give Dad legal advice on "romance scams." -SQ
