Dear Suze, We had Christmas with my new husband’s family. I got tons of candy, I assume because it’s a safe gift since no one knows me well -especially that I’ve always battled weight. What’s the risk of returning them and fibbing about it?
Dear Risky, This is the perfect example of why “little white lies” are useful, -harmless untruths to maintain social courtesies. If your in-laws ask, tell them (truthfully) you enjoyed them immensely. One of the top returned gifts is candy, so lie away! Enlist your husband to be your secret-keeper so he doesn’t blow your story. -SQ
