Dear S.Q. I’ve been asked to bring home a plus one for a formal Thanksgiving family dinner. The woman I’m seeing is picky, opinionated, and smokes. My mother wouldn’t approve, although she’d be kind at the time. What should I do?
Dear WSID, Assumedly, you’ve considered taking her but realize your mom, and maybe others, would be uncomfortable. You’ve thought about not going, and you’ve thought about going alone and lying to your +1 why she’s not invited. How about discussing the problem with your mother -not for her solution to YOUR problem, but as another perspective? I don’t think talking to your date will help because even if she says she’ll be on her best behavior, you know that’s not acceptable enough. All ways have flaws, so just make a plan of action, then act on your plan. The day-after might have fallout, so take comfort that you did what felt right. -SQ
