Dear Suze, My ex of one year invited me to Thanksgiving dinner and since she had our kids for the holiday this year, I agreed. Her family buttonholed me to find out if I was dating, and cry about how lonely my ex has been. Worst of all, our kids want to know if their mom and I are getting back together. I’m not sure what I want, but I hate that I have no answers for the kids.
Dear Not Sure, A year’s separate can seem like a lifetime for kids caught in limbo. The uncertainty often creates anxiety with hope, then disappointed caused by no clear answers about the future. Perhaps they should be left out of seeing the two of you together until you and your ex can figure your family’s future, one household or two, maybe with couples counseling. -SQ
