Dear S.Q. This is our third year living in Alaska. Just after the time change each November, my wife sleeps and eats more, complains of feeling tired and sad, and our sex life tanks to zero. It's better when the time changes back and the days get longer. Just recently, I'm seeing the same pattern and worried -the holidays are just around the corner and I don't want her to miss out again.
Dear Worried. As weird as it seems, there is a type of depression that begins and ends about the same time each year and is related to seasons and length of daylight. Check your medical doctor for diagnosis and treatment. Some home remedies include increased physical exercise, regulated eating and sleeping, and light (photo) therapy. The Mayo Clinic recommends light therapy as a first line treatment that includes purchasing a "light box," with daily exposure upon the first hour of waking -check with professionals for specific details. -SQ
