Push Over Single Dad

Dear Ms. S.Q. I'm a single dad with kids 6, and 8.  I argue with the women I date because they hate the way I parent. They're good kids and I know I give in too much, but I don't see them enough and feel guilty about the divorce. Pushover Dad

Dear Pushover. Time to step up to your new role as both Father and Mother. Kids want and need boundaries from their parent, not a pal. You do them no favors by turning into a mushball who's forgotten what it means to teach your children how to deal successfully with sadness and difficult times. A parent makes tough decisions (enforce bedtime, teeth brushing, eating healthy; set limits on game time), encourage their independence (don't start sleeping with your kids), hold them responsible (consequences for pushing the limit, lying, acting out). Hold the line while life is a roller-coaster. If it's still crazy after two years, seek assistance. Once your kids are squared away, your dates, kids, and you will all be happier.  -SQ
