Dear S. Q. -I'm a big reader and I'm furious at the growing number of banned books in our democratic US of A. Since when have the prudes and narrow-minded banned together in such numbers to impose restrictions on others? I thought the standard for good books was good writing. Well-written books of substance should be offered in libraries, by booksellers, and schools (if important to get at the truth) regardless of the subject matter. Isn't that why America's freedom of speech is a founding principle enshrined in the First Amendment to the US Constitution that guarantees that those who don't like these books are entitled to express their opinion without fear? The problem is, I don't think they have the right to BAN the books anymore than I have the right to force them to read them.. How did they get such clout and how can we, those that love reading, take back our power to avail all books to all people? Book Lover
Dear Book Lover, Many agree with you that the freedom to read needs to be protected from those who want to restrict and ban books. PEN America and other groups against censorship of all kinds are available to help fight your good fight. Did you know that Banned Book Week was started by the American Library Association and Amnesty International! It's celebrated this year from September 22-28, 2024. Time to curl up with a good one. -SQ
