Mental Health Stigma

Dear Suze Q.  I'm an Asian man in my 60's and want a divorce.  I am a good person but I can't talk any more to my family, friends, or church even though they know I've been miserable for years. Mental health counseling is a taboo topic, a stigma that is seen as a sign of weakness or craziness.  Like others, I was raised to believe that my value, my identity, my purpose in life is measured by my ability to care for my family and community.  I would love to talk to a therapist but feel ashamed.  Seeking solace.

Dear Seeking,  Luckily, there are many Asian American therapists who share your culture and language.  All counseling is private and confidential so no one will know you're in counseling unless you tell them. Give it a try.  A professional perspective might guide you to the next level of solace and open options you haven't thought of.     -SQ
