Story Telling and Oral Tradition

Dear Suze Q. Since grandpa moved in, he’s dribbled out family folklore. Stories of his dad as a WWII pilot and living around the world on Air Force bases. He pulls out medals, newspaper clipping, military documents and photos. Other family members aren’t interested in this vessel of history living right in our home. How to arouse enthusiasm?

Dear Story Keeper. Archiving your family’s part in world history is too valuable to let slide away. Ask family members for their ideas to library this invaluable motherlode. Keep a video recorder accessible to catch those spontaneous moments. Invite family with questions/comments to a taped, scheduled interview with grandpa. Add food and spirits to loosen their imagination and tongues. -SQ
