Mankeeping

Dear S.Q. Our empty nest made me realize my husband is a child left at home expecting me to run everything and make life comfortable. He grumbles about picking up a few things and acts helpless in cooking, cleaning, planning events. He says he’ll get better but it’s not true. I’m exhausted and I’m done.

Dear Done, “Mankeeping” was coined by Stanford University researchers to describe the unequal emotional burden women carry in heterosexual relationships. Men without emotional fluency are unattractive but women have been raised to be caregivers for everyone, and overlook other’s flaws, even while suppressing their own needs. Time to get your needs met, with or w/o him. -SQ
