Dearest Suze Q. On the universal scale of assholes, I don’t even rate. But as I look backward from my perch at 70 years old, I could have been a better man. 3 divorces attest that I was a bad husband, but, I think that 5 grown successful kids and happy grandchildren say I did something right. #1 son just broke up with his 2nd wife and blasted me as the reason he’s had years of therapy. What is my legacy?
Dear 70, Your middle-aged son, divorcing for a second time despite the support of years of therapy, who projects his blame onto you, may say more about him than you. Therapy is intended to teach the skills to understand, define, and resolve one’s issues. Without more info, I question why his daddy-issues are so dominant. His hurtful words are just one data point spoken during emotional pain. What would your other 4 kids says about you in their honest moments -that is your legacy. -SQ
