Dear Suze Q. After a Girls' Night Out, I stayed to listen to the band. A guy I’d flirted with all night pressured me to leave with him. I asked the bartender for an “Angel shot on ice.” She said she didn’t know what that was and I ask her to look it up. Minutes later the manager escorted me outside to wait for my rideshare. Shouldn’t the waitress have know what was happening?
Dear Angel, “Angel shots” are coded words when a customer feels threatened and asks a barkeep for help. Most experienced bartenders know the term. Angel shot neat/straight/straight up, means the guest needs an escort to their car; Angel shot on ice/on the rocks, means the guest needs a staff escort to their rideshare or taxi; Angel shot with a twist/with lemon/with lime, means that the guest is requesting staff to immediately contact local authorities. Angel shot is a safety code, use it as needed. -SQ
