A Cigar Is Just A cigar

Dear Suze, I have recurrent dreams where I lose my purse. Sometimes I lose it, then find it. Other times I lose and find it several times in the same dream. I wake up discombobulated. I’m extremely worried because I live off my retirement account that’s tied to stocks and bonds.

Dear Purseless. Dream analysis is a squishy, soft art (not a science). Let’s avoid Freudian interpretations because this probably isn’t about hysterical female sexual frustration. The likely interpretation is you’re worried about losing the content of your purse: money, identity, phone (that stores everything of importance). Your daily concerns are so penetrating that they continue into your sleep. The emotional centers of the brain triggers dreams, hence the feelings of anxiety and confusion upon waking. Dreams work on the same thorny issues while you sleep that the logical regions of the brain work on during the day. Reduce your daytime anxiety and your dreams should return to calm.  -SQ
