Tattoo You

Dear Suze, I’m old school, in my late 60s with grandchildren. I half-jokingly always told my children that if they had piercings or tattoos, they’d be out of my will. I still have frightening images of my dad, a sailor in WWII with a tattoo on his bicep, that when he died was as wrinkled and faded as he. My daughter wants to get a rose on her shoulder along with her 17-year-old. I said she’d regret it and offered to pay for a spa day instead.

Dear Old School, I assume your threat to exclude your daughter from your will was a deterrent from her impulsive teen behavior based on your memories of bad tattoos on your dad’s wrinkled skin. Now that your daughter isn’t a child, but a grown woman with a teen, it’s time to rethink your threat. Tattoos show one’s personality and represent stories -like the bond of mother and child. How about being gracious and buy a spa date regardless of the tattoo decision? -SQ
