Guns And Common Sense

Dear Suze Q, My husband was raised with guns and he wants me to learn and feel comfortable shooting so I’m not afraid of something that can protect my life. We live in a nice, secure part of a big city. I’ve agreed to go to a range, and then buy a gun.

Dear Student, Guns are double edged swords. If you know how to use a gun, it can save your life or end the life of another -intentionally or accidentally. It’s a deadly weapon that requires a responsible user with thorough knowledge of your state and federal gun laws. Be familiar through repeated cleaning, storing, and firing. Don’t brandish a gun as a threat (illegal in many states and dangerous). Guns don’t make you right or strong. Universal, non-negotiable safety rules for responsible gun ownership include: 1) Assume all guns are loaded; 2) Never point a gun at anything unless you intend to destroy it; 3) Always know your target and what’s behind and around it; 4) Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. Shoot smart, shoot safe. -SQ
