Forget Labels, Get The Results

Dear Suze, Sorry for “using” your free advice, but since you’re a licensed psychologist, I figured you could steer my husband and me anonymously in the right direction about an embarrassing issue. Our 6-year-old repeated first grade and is a handful with short attention, impulsive and hyper behavior. We’ve resisted medication or “labeling” him, but this week he told his teacher we lock him in his room and beat him. Not true, but the Department of Children and Family Services wants to meet. Terrified in CA.

Dear Terrified, Mandatory reporters include school personnel, daycare/camp staff, law enforcement, medical/mental health professionals, and others who MUST report any reasonable suspicion of child (or elder) abuse. Family Services will investigate the charges. They have the power to remove your child if in danger, so you need to cooperate fully and truthfully. Perhaps this was your child’s way of crying for help. Hopefully, he’ll receive the right medical diagnosis, treatment, and school placement. Rely on the experts (Family Service, doctors, educators), and do your own research to become an expert on your child’s needs rather than worrying about labels. -SQ
