Dear Suze Q. I’ve been asked to see my aunt whose dementia’s progressed to not recognizing even her spouse. I’d rather remember her like when she was healthy years ago and we were close.
Dearie, “To thine own self be true” may be your best guide to visit or not. Others may pressure or guilt you into visiting, but the ultimate decision is yours alone. Your choice, if honestly made, will be correct either way. Decide if carrying memories into your future of past fun times is better than current ones of her end-stage dementia. -SQ
