Dear Suz, I was born in the US but my parents were not. I live with a girl of a different ethnicity and religion and we love each other’s holiday traditions. My parents refused to come to our house to celebrate her main holiday, or to invite her to theirs where all my relatives will be. My parents say maybe next year, when they know her better (and if she’s still around, is implied). I’m hurt and pissed.
Dear H & P. Discuss with your parents if they mean their offer to know her better, then hold them to it. Take this next year to exposure your gf and parents to each other through activities and events of both cultures. They may never be bffs, but you’ll enjoy a pleasant journey together. -SQ
