Skin Tags

Dear Suze, Out of the blue I got a call from my lover’s previous girlfriend. After screaming I was a man-stealer and we deserved each other, her parting words were that he has genital herpes. He said he has skin tags, not a STD. Should I look?

Dearie, Yes, skin tags are benign, non-contagious soft hanging skin often found in the folds of skin, like the groin. Appearance is critical for a diagnosis -skin tags have a small attachment at the base and bigger top (like a mushroom); genital warts are flat, wide-based with a rough surface (like cauliflower). Genital warts are contagious, are caused by an infection of human papilloma virus (HPV), change in appearance and grow over time. Neither are life threatening and both are easily treated. Since you’re unsure of what you’ve been exposed to, get medical advice and treatment. Neither dx is a reason to dump your guy unless he is a cheating bastard. -SQ
