“Why Me Lord”

Dear Readers, No, this is not a religious blog but a tribute to a revered Renaissance Man that wrote “Why Me Lord” at a low point in his life. Kris Kristofferson died peacefully September 28, 2024, at his Maui home, leaving behind his 7 children and 8 grandchildren. He was 88-years-old, just coming into age of an exceptionally fine liquor. He spoke to the heart of multigenerations from the iconic words of, “windshield wipers slappin’ time” (Me and Bobby McGee), to “He would not bow, he would not fight. He knew the deal was down and dirty and nothing wrong could make it right,” referring to Gandhi and the price of freedom he paid (and MLK, Jesus, JFK and RFK) but still They Killed Him entitles the song.

He was bigger than this.  He was a Golden-Globe winner, a Golden Glove boxer, Rhodes scholar, author/poet, outlaw country artist with the Highwaymen, US Army helicopter pilot and veteran. I had the privilege of seeing him in his hard drinking days at the Troubadour and Whiskey-A-Go-Go in Los Angeles. He came in peace and graced us for a time with his spirit. He died Saturday leaving the rest of us lonesome, Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down. -SQ
