D-Day, June 6, 1944

Operation Overlord, codenamed Operation Neptune began the liberation of France and the rest of Western Europe from Nazi Germany with the Normandy landings 80 years ago today.  13 nations banned together in what one historian wrote was the "one of the most famous single days in all of human history." "The eyes of the world are upon you," read General Eisenhower's order to send US troops into war, "The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.  In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world,"  (National Archives).  May we never see another World War, and may democracy reign free. -SQ
