Dear Suze Q, I’m
a 62-year-old African-American woman, dating a 68-year-old
African-American male. He’s nice enough, and I enjoy being with him.
Possibly something could develop. However, he has these crazy dreadlocks
that look inappropriate for an older professional man. How can I
approach this topic since he’s really attached to his “new look.” -Dreading the Locks
Dear Dreading, Imagine that he wants you to dye your hair because he thinks the business world would like you better. Would you think that was a good tip? Or would you think this was an opinion that he should keep to his damn self and wonder what controlling behavior was coming next? It is precarious to start a relationship by reshaping someone into the person you want them to be. Tread lightly on the topic of his "new" dreads. If he asks your opinion, be kind but honest. If he doesn't ask, why offer your unsolicited opinion? He's clearly made his choice in hair style. Live with it, or live without him. SQ
