Time To Take Mom's Keys

Dear Suze Q. Mom insists on living on her own. She's 78 with no dementia or major physical problems, but her eyesight and hearing are going. When is it time to start restricting her freedoms?

Dear Adult Child, Think of it as the reverse of raising a child, -there you added freedoms as they demonstrated they can handle the responsibility. When your teen got their license and violated the law or were dangerous when driving, you restricted them temporarily. With the elderly, you resistrict their driving permanently and leave it to others: friends or transportation companies. If it hasn't happened yet, the next is restricting phone and money. Take this in stride as part of life. -SQ
