Dear Suze Q. My American girlfriend is trying hard to fit into my Hispanic culture, but she's failing miserably, like expecting my whole native country to celebrate Cinco de Mayo as Mexico's Independence Day (September 16) with tacos and tequila, and my family to have a huge party. Wrong. How can I politely tell her to get educated? J.E.
Dear J. I think you've described the problem well. Help educate her, before she meets your family, about facts and misconception of Cinco de Mayo. Tell her to bring non-alcoholic agua fresca instead of hard alcohol to celebrate the "fighting spirit" shown during the Battle Of Puebla against France in 1862, not a Mexican national holiday, nor Independence Day from Spain. Prep her for a meal of mole poblano or chiles en nogada, distinct dishes to Puebla, Mexico, the birthplace of Cinco de Mayo. -SQ
