Repressed Trauma

Dear Suze Q., I’m hooked on crime-dramas. Can hypnosis recall forgotten traumas and past lives?

Dear Hooked,  Hypnosis has been around for 200 years and is just now being understood. The AMA and APA endorse it as treatment by licensed, trained, and experienced therapists for certain conditions, supported by scientific research. Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation, where you are awake and aware of surroundings but the mind is laser-focused (detached from distractions). The subconscious is open to therapeutic suggestions to achieve goals: medical and psychological. Hypnotist v. hypnotherapist is a BIG critical distinction, like between a mental health professional and a fraud. Hypnosis is effective for pain management, psychological issues (PTSD, anxiety, pain, phobias), and change (weight, smoking, addictions). Hypnosis research indicates it does NOT enhance reliable memories, so nix on credible previous lives, and repressed memories. -SQ
