Dear Suze, I’ve been part of a group chat for years, but lately I’ve been excluded by certain people when I talk about religion or Trump. I wasn’t sure until my friend showed me her group chat missing my comments. I want others to know what it feels like being sent to Coventry!
Dear Ghosted, Shadow banning, or stealth/hell/ghost banning limit an unaware user from part of an on-line community. Reddit, Twitter, Craigslist, FB, and others use it to block abusive behavior, by making the website visible to the sender but not to others. Proving the practice is illegal and breach of the company’s terms of use is tough. “Send someone to Coventry” is a British colloquialism meaning to block and pretend they don’t exist. Kind of like the Americanism, “Bye, Felicia.” Ask the suspects why they banned you, or choose your options. -SQ
