Dear Suze Q. My sister wants to give me a DNA kit as a gift. Pros and cons?
Dear brother, “Sometimes your DNA family can be the greatest gift of all,” says the 23andMe website. This slogan is true but 23andMe is out of business after its 2023 data breech, lawsuit, and bankruptcy. So buyers beware, caveat emptor! Fabulous stories abound when DNA is revealed, as well as tales of deep family secrets and devastating discoveries.
NYTimes recommends only 2 companies: (1): ancestryDNA ($99), + the largest family-matching database with easy to understand historical context, - can’t distinguish maternal/paternal lineages. (2): FamilyTreeDNA ($80), + add-on costs give highly detailed maternal/paternal lineage analysis, - law enforcement has access to data base. Other companies exist so ✔️ them out. -SQ
