Loneliness Is On The Rise

Dear Suze Q. My grandkids grew up home-schooled because of COVID. Now they have a huge campus and adolescent hormones. My 15-year-old granddaughter wants to be an influencer and stresses over her looks and other’s opinions. My 17-year-old grandson is addicted to gaming and has no ambition or skills. Neither have real friends and are socially awkward.

Dear Grand, They need to disconnect from electronics and have live interactions. Teen surveys show a rise in not feeling useful, more pessimism, and enjoying life less, -all signs of depression. See them often. Create rules and goals when they are with you, including no electronics and no isolation. Include them in the planning and tell them why, -that’s it’s a grandparents’ job to help raise successful adults. Do activities and over-nights with friends/relatives. Teach skills: cooking, board games, laundry, money management and budgeting, first aid, dance. Give them goals and reward them for achievements. -SQ
