Dementia, the Memory Robber

Dear Suze Q.  My wife's dementia is so severe that she doesn't know her facility caregivers, nor recognize the pictures of our family members. On good days, I visit for hours and watch her slip away. Most days, she doesn't know who I am. We're only in our 60s and I've grieved for 4 years with few tears left. I'm thinking of dating but am consumed with guilt.

Dear Consumed, Dating implies that you are ready to commit to a potential partner, -that is not you, yet. Honestly reveal your circumstances (on a dating site or to friends/family) that you seek a companion but that your day-to-day circumstances prevent you from promising anything for the future. Don't feel guilty. You need to stay strong for both you and your wife, by loving her, AND fulfilling your own emotional needs. -SQ
